Haha... Next entry! Cupid [the love god], son of Venus [or Aprodite --> whatever her name is spelled as] was an immortal. This is a story of how he came to fall in love for the first time in his matchmaking business... Please forgive me if I can't relate the story so factually [coz me read the book like a week ago...]

** Found this story when I was draining books out of the library all holiday round because I'd almost bored myself to death [haha] **
Phrase: "Do you think me a monster?"

Cupid was sent by his mum, Venus, the godness of love, to punish a princess of a certain ancient Greek country whose beauty was unsurpassed till her countrymen went to worship her instead of the godness of love...

Angry, she told her son [Venus was known to not have a very good temper] to find that princess the most hideous husband there ever was and shoot his arrows through the princess and the ugly/ hideous creature's heart, so that her kinsmen may be well and throughly disgusted and in turn not worship her.

It turned out that cupid did not shoot any of the arrows at any suitors whilst he was searching for a suitable candidate that his mother instructed and so there was no one wanting her hand by the time she was of a marriageable age, which was quite depressing for a woman of her time... Her father was quite worried...

Henceforth, her father when to sacrifice for the gods and ask for help as he had suspected that his daughter had somehow offended one of the gods. Soon Mercury [or Hermes aka. the messenger god] came to him and said: "Leave your daughter on the summit of the mountain closest to yours, and we shall see who would want her as a bride..."

The poor princess had to travel up the scary peak of the mountain all alone whilst her countrymen could only stay at the foot of the mountain and watch their dainty princess slowly climb up the hill [it was a heartbreaking sight for most of them because the princess was not too hardy, but sweet-natured and kind to her fellowmen] and to see her struggle up the mountain was... Torturous for most of them... They slowly watched her disappear out of their iew as she was scalling the mountain.

It had happened that Cupid had decided to look at the princess before making a decision out of the many suitable candidates he had 'researched'... However, when he saw the fair maiden [poor dear] on the hill looking helpless [and like a damsel in distress], his heart was moved. As he flew closer towards her [to have a better look of course], he was so enthralled by her beauty, he accidently pricked himself on one of his arrows, and at once, the quiver of arrows' master had to be thumped by the power of his own arrows... He was in love with a mortal his mother had forbade him to love...

She, on the other hand, was so tired after climbing the mountain, she disregarded her 'princessy' behaviours and fell asleep on the summit of the mountain. The west wind [following cupid's instructions] lifted her from the summit to the heavenly palace above.

She awoke in the home of cupid [although she didn't know it]... The place was richly decorated with luxuries and flora beyond reach in the mortal world. She ate well, bathed in the clear cool spring waters and explored the place... The place surrounding her new home seemed endless, and she was so tired after the exploring, she feel asleep in the bedroom prepared for her.

When she awoke, it was dark and cupid stood in front of her [face hidden in the shadows]. He said:"Fair maiden, do not fear, for now you are in the home of a god]... She was perplexed and shocked of course... "From now on I am your husband"

"But why don't you let me see your face?"
"I cannot, for seeing my face will bring you more calamities. Let us be content with what i am now..."
**Actually, cupid didn't want her to see his face because he was afraid that she would not love him for himself but because he was a god [the-adoration-for-a-god-illness... + this love god is so XXX]**

They enjoyed much quality time the nights and cupid visited her everyday [he can't visit her in the morning for fear his identity would be revealed] that she grew fond of him, for he seemed to treaure her like she was his everything... However, she was bored in the day when he could not reveal himself and so she requested him to let her sisters [yes, she has sisters, and she is the youngest of the 3] to visit her. Out of love for her, he relented, but also warned her about the possibilities of the calamities that may lie ahead if she as not careful.

The west wind brought her sisters up to the heavens [her sisters were married to mortals by then] and they gasped at the luxuries that she now lived in. Their mortal husbands could not even afford half the luxury. And being the most pampered and the most beautiful sister of all, they were all out to outdo her and were glad during that period of time when she had no suitors... However seeing her so much better off, jealousy got the better of them and they scorned at the mysteriousness of her husband.

"Why does he always keep his face hidden?"
"Who knows, he might even be a monster-in-disguise!"
"Sister, why don't you just take an oil lamp one fine night and a sharp dagger in another hand and kill off that monster husband of yours?"
"We regret to see you in such a state!"
"Finish him off! Lest he kills you one day and devours you!"
"You must act fast!"
Of course, this was out of their spitefulness to destroy her happiness... However, out of her fondness for him, she refused to believe them.

One fine day, whilst they were with her, they managed to persuade her that her husband was indeed a monster. So, that very night, she tip-toed to where her husband was taking a rest for the night. Lo and behold! The oil lamp she was holding showed her that her husband was none other than Cupid! The son of the almighty Zeus, and the god of love! She observed his golden curls, felt his smooth white skin then touched the quiver of arrows laying beside his bed... Ah! out of her absent-mindedness, she got pricked by his arrows and was immediately in love with Cupid, blood dripping from her finger...

However, when she got pricked, she could not hold her oil lamp steady and a drop of oil landed on the love god. That woke him up. And upon seeing his wife with the oil lamp on one hand and the dagger on the other, his heart was shredded as he thought there was no trust in their love. He immediately got up, looked at the just-got-pricked princess and spoke sadly:"Do you think me a monster?!"

With that, not giving a chance for the princess to explain at all, he vanished... [actually he flew towrds his mother's home and lumped there weeping for his lost love]The princess's heart was broken as well as she had just... [well, you can figure it out yourself]

She was anxious to get her love back [because she just fell in love], and so she plucked up courage and when to knock on Venus's door [You remember that Venus sent cupid to rid of her?] She was of course enraged to hear the truth and sent her on 3 nearly-impossible missions so as to meet Cupid again [who was crying in his mother's bedroom...]

**Let's skip the rest of the mission parts [coz this is getting draggy]**
So, the last mission was for her to go to the underworld to ask Queen persephone/core [aka. Queen of hell/hades] for a portion of her beauty for Venus. This challenge was the hardest so far as no living actually made it to the land of the dead... However, not all the gods were on Venus's side and so, Athena [godness of wisdom and war] helped her get past the sercurities of the underworld aliveand warned her never to open the 'beauty' box that persephone gave to her.

Alas, out of her vainity, on the way to get to Venus's palace, she opened the box and there and then she fell into an eternal sleep in the middle of the road...

Cupid, having understood the whole truth [at last!] when in search for his princess. He found her in a lump in the middle of the road. Looking at the box, he understood what had happened, and so he gathered up all the 'beauty' that was released and shut them back in the box. He then awoke his princess with passionate kisses.

Finally, the great hoo-ha was over and he lifted his wife back to mount Olypmus [where the gods reside]and asked Zeus to formally marry them [of the the most unhappy person was Venus and she refused to give them her blessings **but didn't really matter anyway**]

Happily ever after.
